🎥 How to create a Course Type (w/ VIDEO)

This guide explains how to create a Course Type, the template used to add new courses.

Written by Costa Bontioti

📝 Overview

A Course Type is a template you can add new courses to as and when you need to. Each course is a sequence of sessions that customers attend as a group, though you can allow drop-ins for individual sessions if you like.

🧠 Example:

You have an On Ramp course that runs 6 days at the beginning of each month. Each course has different dates from one month to the next, and maybe a different instructor, but every course belongs to the same On Ramp Course Type and shares the same basic details.

🛠️ Create the Course Type

Head to CoursesCourse Types ➜ click New Course Type.

  1. Add a name and description for your Course Type.

  2. Tick Schedule course if you'd like to add the schedule right away.

🏷️ Set Your Pricing

You can allow non-members (customers without a membership) to register, and set their price for the whole course. You can also set course prices for existing memberships:

  • One-use debits the customer's membership by one usage allowance. Make sure the selected memberships allow course bookings, via MembershipsMemberships ➜ click the membership ➜ click Edit next to Usability ➜ ensure "Classes, Appointments, and Courses" is selected.

  • Non-member rate charges the customer the non-member rate.

  • One-use plus debits one usage allowance and charges an additional fee you set, which can also be used to give membership holders a discount on the non-member rate.

Submit the page once you're happy with your settings.

👨‍👨‍👦‍👦 Set Up Groups

Next, decide the number of customer groups for this Course Type, and set your course size limit.

💡 A group of customers takes the course together. For example, a Monday group attending each Monday for 6 weeks, and a separate Wednesday group attending each Wednesday for 6 weeks.

If you have multiple groups, give each one a name.

👉 Additional Options

  • Allow customers to register after the course begins. If chosen, they'll still pay the full course price, though you can override the price from the purchase form when registering them from the business side.

  • Allow single-session registrations for a set fee.

💡 Check that the Courses tab is enabled via Customer SiteCustomise, so your customers can see it. Once ready, add your schedule: see the guide here.

What's the difference between a Course Type and a Course?

Click the arrow to see the answer

A Course Type is the template. A Course is an actual scheduled instance created from that template, with its own dates, instructor, and attendees.

Can I have multiple groups running at different times?

Click the arrow to see the answer

Yes. Set the number of groups when creating your Course Type, and give each one a name if you have more than one.
