Update Membership For Sale Status

This guide explains how to change a membership's status between For Sale and Not for sale, and what the change means for new purchases and existing members.

Written by Costa Bontioti

📝 Overview

You can easily change the status of a membership to For Sale or Not for sale, so you decide whether customers can buy the membership going forward or not.

⚠️ Marking a membership as "not for sale" prevents not only customers buying it, but also you selling it to them on their behalf using your business account.

Any existing customers who already have the membership, however, continue to be able to use it.

🛠️ Update the For Sale Status

You change the status from the membership's General section. Head to Memberships ➜ select the membership you wish to edit ➜ click the Edit button on the right-hand side within the General section, and change the status as desired.

Finally, click Save at the bottom of the page.

Can existing customers still use a membership that is not for sale?

Yes. Any customers who already have the membership continue to be able to use it. The "not for sale" status only prevents new purchases going forward.

Where do not-for-sale memberships go in my membership list?

Click the arrow to see the answer

Memberships that are not for sale and have at least 1 active member still show in your membership list by default. Memberships that are not for sale and have 0 active members are hidden initially, and you can reveal them by clicking Show all memberships in the Membership section of your menu. For more details, see the guide here.

I want customers to be able to buy the membership, but not see it on my membership list. Should I use "Not for sale"?

Click the arrow to see the answer

No. If a membership is set to "Not for sale", it cannot be purchased at all. If you would like the membership to be purchasable but not visible in the memberships section of your customer site, keep it set to For Sale and set its visibility to Hidden in the Customer Site section of the membership settings.

You can then share a direct link to the membership with the customers you choose. For steps on finding that link, see the guide here.

Can I delete the membership instead of marking it not for sale?

Click the arrow to see the answer

Only memberships that have never been purchased can be deleted. If customers currently own the membership, or have owned it in the past, it cannot be deleted because the membership data is needed for historical reporting.

In that case, setting the status to "Not for sale" is the way to retire it. For more details, see the guide here.
