Written by Costa Bontioti

📝 Overview

A Stripe terminal lets you take in-person card payments from your customers by tap, chip, or swipe. Once it is set up and connected to your account, you can use it to take payment for memberships, store items, and more.

This guide walks you through powering on your terminal, connecting it to the internet, finding your registration code, and connecting it to your account. The steps cover the Stripe Reader S700, S710, and T600.

💡 Not sure which terminal to use? See the guide on supported card readers here.

⚡ Powering Your Terminal

How you power on your terminal depends on the model. The S700 and S710 run on a battery, while the T600 has no battery and must stay connected to power.

Click on the arrow to find out more about powering on your terminal

Stripe Reader S700 & S710

When you first receive the device, install the battery (if applicable). With the back of the device facing you, lift up from the indentation at the bottom left corner to detach the back cover. Insert the battery by sliding it into the exposed slot with the gold connectors at the top aligned.

After the battery is in place, charge the reader by using an outlet or the optional ethernet dock. Connect the reader to power by plugging the provided cable into the port with the lightning bolt symbol.

After the reader is fully charged, hold down the power button on the right hand side until the screen turns on. After the device powers on, press the power button to sleep or wake the device. To fully power off the device, hold down the power button until the power off option is shown on the screen, then select it.

Stripe Reader T600

The T600 does not have a battery, so it needs to be connected to its power source to set up and operate. It comes with a USB-C cable and a wall power adapter.

  1. Plug the provided USB-C cable into the USB-C port on the back of the reader, and route the cable through the cable routing.

  2. Connect the other end of the cable to the provided power adapter and plug it into a power outlet.

  3. If the reader does not power on automatically, press the power button on the back of the device to turn the screen on.

  4. Once it is on, you will be asked to select your language.

⚠️ If the T600 is unplugged, it will switch off. Keep it connected to power whenever you want to take payments.

💡 Even when it is not in use, leave your terminal plugged in and powered on to receive automatic software updates.

🛜 Connecting Your Terminal to the Internet

Once the terminal is powered on, you will be asked to connect to a Wi-Fi network. Select the option to connect to your Wi-Fi network, and the terminal will scan for available networks. Select the one you would like to connect to and enter your Wi-Fi password.

Once your terminal is connected to the internet, it will give you the option to either change your Wi-Fi network or update the software. Select the option to update the software to install the necessary updates.

⚠️ The Wi-Fi network must use WPA/WPA2/WPA3 encryption and have a password, and must also be the same network you will be using when taking in-person payments.

💡 Prefer a wired connection? The S700, S710, and T600 can connect via ethernet using the Stripe Reader Hub, which is sold separately.

📡 Enabling Cellular

Terminal readers that support cellular can operate in either Wi-Fi or cellular mode. When cellular mode is enabled, the device automatically connects to the internet over cellular whenever Wi-Fi is unavailable.

Click the arrow to learn how to enable cellular for your Stripe Reader S710

⚠️ Disclaimer: Once cellular is enabled for the location, you will be charged $10.00 USD (CA$14.00 / £7.00 / A$15.00 / €9.00) a month for each Stripe Reader S710 device, for unlimited cellular data.

Unsure which model you have? Flip over your reader and look under the SN number. The model type will be listed.

  1. Log in to the Stripe Dashboard.

  2. On the left-hand side, click Payments.

  3. From the drop-down, click Terminal.

  4. Click the Locations subheading.

  5. Select the Location with the device you would like to enable cellular for.

  6. Locate the cellular modem setting. It can be under Local configurations or Inherited configurations.

  7. Click Override. You will need to hover your mouse over the pencil icon to see the word Override.

  8. On the Cellular connectivity pop-up, toggle Enabled to on, then click Update in the bottom right.

  9. Acknowledge the billing notice by clicking Confirm.

  10. Click Apply changes in the bottom right corner.

  11. Restart the Stripe Reader S710 so it can pick up these changes.

  12. Once the reader reboots, a message will appear saying "Network configuration has changed. Device will reboot to take effect". This confirms the reader has taken the new cellular configuration. The reader will reboot again.

  13. Once the device has completed the reboot, you should see a cellular signal indicator in the top bar, and you are ready to take payments on cellular.

💡 Cellular is optional and is not required to use your terminal. Wi-Fi alone is sufficient for most businesses, so only enable cellular if you need backup connectivity for mobile or off-site use, or in locations with unreliable Wi-Fi.

⚠️ Only the Stripe Reader S710 is cellular compatible. The S700 and T600 connect via Wi-Fi or ethernet only.

🌍 Selecting Your Language

You will be asked to select the language you would like the terminal to use, along with the country you are located in.

💡 On the T600, you are asked to select your language as soon as the reader powers on, before connecting to Wi-Fi.

🔑 Finding Your Registration Code

Once you have selected your language and country, the terminal should be fully set up and will display a registration code. Make a note of this code, as you will need it to connect your terminal to your account.

💡 If a registration code is not displayed, go to Settings on your terminal, enter the PIN 07139, and select Generate pairing code. On the T600, swipe from the left side of the screen to the right to find Settings.

💻 Connecting Your Terminal to Your Account

With your registration code ready, add the terminal from your payment settings on the Business Dashboard.

Go to Settings ➜ Collect Payments ➜ Payment Methods, then click Manage next to the Terminals section.

⚠️ Once the terminal is registered, it will start downloading updates, which may take 5-10 minutes. Please do not turn off or unplug the terminal while this is happening.
