🎥 Google Analytics-Universal Analytics: How to set up conversion goals and use events (w/ VIDEO)

This guide walks you through creating conversion goals in Universal Analytics using the events your account sends, with examples and troubleshooting tips.

Written by Costa Bontioti

📝 Overview

Once your account is connected to Universal Analytics, you can turn the events it sends into conversion goals and track the actions that matter most.

You can use the events your account sends to create conversion goals in Universal Analytics. For example, if you are promoting high-ticket memberships, you could create a goal that tracks membership purchases over a certain value. This guide walks you through creating goals, with a few examples and some troubleshooting tips.

📕 How to create a goal

To create a goal, first log into your Google Analytics account. Then head to Admin (the cog in the bottom left corner) and click 'Goals' under the view you want to create the goal for, then click 'New Goal'.

Opening Goals and creating a new goal in Universal Analytics

Select 'Custom' for the goal type, enter a name, and select 'Event' for the goal details.

You will then be presented with options for how to build the values.

Building the goal values in Universal Analytics

You can fill out these fields with one or more values. We usually recommend just one to keep things simple, but combinations are useful too, for example membership purchases over a certain value. You do not need to select a value to have it included in reports.

Here are a few examples of values you might enter:

  • All paid membership purchases. Enter "teamup-memberships" in Category and "teamup-paidmembership-purchase" in Action.

  • A specific membership purchase. For a membership called "Free Trial", enter "Free Trial" in the Label box.

  • All purchases over $100. Enter "teamup-memberships" in Category, "teamup-paidmembership-purchase" in Action, and "100" in the Value box.

  • All purchases of a water bottle in your store. Category is "teamup-ecommerce", Action is "teamup-store-purchase", and Label is "water bottle".

🔧 Troubleshooting

If your goal is not showing data even though there is event data, there are two common causes.

  • Goals never add historical data, so this is often just a case of waiting longer to see your results.

  • If there is event data since you added the goal but it still is not showing, something was likely typed incorrectly in the goal setup. Check that the category, action, or label is typed exactly the same as the event.
